Game of the Year 2009 Results
Compiled by Paul Harrington

After months of voting and catching up on games we missed, the OHR community has decided on its choice for the best games of 2009. Votes were cast for best graphics, design, writing, ridiculousness, and overall Best of Show. All games that received more than one vote will be listed in the results. Let's get started!

Game of the Year 2009
This year, two new games dominated the top of the charts. I expected a close vote between Spoonweaver's Slimes and James Paige's Don't Eat Soap!, but I didn't expect that they'd end up dead even in the Game of the Year category. Congratulations to Mr. Paige and Mr. Weaver! Both games showed a unique art style, great scripting, and on top of that, were both completed games.

"A Bubble Bobble tribute that's a better sequel than any of the official Bubble Bobble sequels." -Paul Harrington
Slimes
by Spoonweaver
TIE
1st Place - 19 Points

"The first puzzle game on the OHR I feel comfortable saying stands on its own and has good level design. Slimes is cute, effective, and the puzzles have multiple solutions, which is great. Better than Lemmings, if you ask me." -JSH

Village People: The Videogame
by Paul Harrington
2nd Place - 13 Points

"[Paul] is the only other game designer I know who would sooner flavor a game with pointless text and puzzles for the sake of content (i.e. immersion, or better yet, options) than to submit an emaciated game that most players would soon forget. This game gives us the perfect reminder of that quality whenever we equip the disco ball so that the entire screen will flash. Utterly pointless, and oh so awesome. " -Pepsi Ranger

Bob the Hamster in the Crypt of Baconthulhu
by James Paige
3rd Place - 11 Points

"Engine mastermind James Paige's OHR games can be few and far between, so when he releases one people tend to take notice. Recently, the community was given quite a surprise when he not only participated in the Terrible Games Contest, but even won it, too! The game is Bob the Hamster in the Crypt of Baconthulhu, and let me tell you, it's really something." -Uncommon

Best Graphics 2009
Cartoony graphics won out over more traditional styles in this year's Best Graphics vote. The games that received enough votes to rank all show very distinct styles, and each one offers something new. Congratulations to FnrrfYgmSchnish/Dark Blubber for not only winning this vote with his Mexican-themed RPG Okedoke, but for doing so using restrictive contest rules for his visuals.

Best Design 2009
This category included a variety of topics, from map design, to plotscripting, to overall structure. Once again, we have a tie, and once again, it's Slimes and Soap! These games' major strength came from how well their stages were designed and how perfectly they were scripted, so it's no surprise that they both came out on top. Which game is better depends on whether you prefer Lemmings-style puzzle games or Bubble Bobble-style arcade games.

Most Ridiculous 2009
Some of these games hurt our souls, some hurt our eyes, and some bring us closer to nirvana. All of these games contain a few moments where you'll be left saying "what in the name of god is happening?" The top two are made of practically nothing BUT these moments.

Looking away from the past and into the future for a minute, let's see what games people are anticipating for 2010. Some of these are entirely new games, some are updates to existing games.
