Dragon Bustier

Dragon Bustier is a solid old school RPG. I appreciated it both for its art style, and for the deep sense of nostalgia it evoked in me. Unfortunately some of those old-school elements are likely to be turn-offs for players who didn't cut their teeth on Dragon Warrior I, II and NES Final Fantasy.

I'll get the bad over with right away. The battles get too repetitive, the encounter rate is too high, the heros miss their targets way too often, and players (like me) who spent an arduous hour grinding for enough gold to buy the good equipment back in town will practically scream when they find the 9999 gold treasure chest just a little further into the dungeon.

Empty Treasure Box
But this treasure chest? Yeah, don't bother.

With that out of the way, lets examine what there is to like about this game. First off is the art style. The pixel art is great. The only portraits are for the heroes, but they are top notch. The enemies are also fantastic, and most of them adhere to a cute funny "big head" style that brought a smile to my face every time I encountered a new enemy type.

The remainder of the graphics are pretty simplistic, but they all fit in nicely with the overall style and theme of an old-school RPG.

I should also comment that I liked the music. I have no idea if it was original or if it was ripped from somewhere, but thought it all fit nicely, and occasionally had me singing along, which is something that Dragon Warrior I did successfully when I was a kid (much to my mother's annoyance)

Red Dragon

I do however, have a beef with this game, which has nothing to do with the flaws I mentioned earlier. The title of this game is "Dragon Bustier", and the title screen promised me bustier-related humor which was only barely delivered upon. The game was completely devoid of any risque humor. I am not saying that I wanted anything tasteless, and I was certainly not hoping for a "hentai" game, but I was really left a little disapointed that the game was not peppered with undergarment related puns. That might sound corny, but I guess that after seeing the title screen, corny corset puns was what I wanted.
