8-Bit
Sprite Pack

These are the graphics I made when I
was working on my first attempt at
an 8-bit game, back around the time the first 8-Bit Contest was
announced. I never ended up getting far enough with it to actually
enter, and looking back, a lot of my graphics probably would've
violated the rules--for some reason I wasn't counting "transparent
black" as one of the four colors you're allowed, even though the
contest rules did count it.
However, I finished a pretty good load of graphics before I lost
interest in the game, and I wouldn't want them to go to waste sitting
on my hard drive for all eternity. So I'm making them free for anyone
to use, in case someone's really lazy or sucks at graphics but wants to
make an 8-bit-styled game anyway.
Note that the battle graphics are set up like the NES Final Fantasies
(all the black is transparent, because the backgrounds are mostly black
with some scenery at the top), and there really isn't enough here to
make a complete game. For example, the world map tileset has
snow-covered towns, caves, and castles, but there aren't any "inside"
tilesets for these places... so you'll have to make your own.
Feel free to use and edit these graphics in whichever way you want. If
you do use these graphics (or edited versions of them) in your game,
I'd prefer if you'd at least give me credit for the ones that I made,
though. Or at least don't claim that you
made them all!
Heroes
These are the walkabouts and in-battle
graphics for the five playable
characters I had planned for the game.
Originally the blue-haired guy was named Lorenzio, the big guy in armor
was Elias, the pink-haired girl was Puccena, the old wizard guy was
Hadada, and the dark-skinned guy with the cape was Lord Kazoontite (who
was also the main villain for half of the game, before both sides
realized that the guys they were fighting weren't the real enemy.)
Enemies
Small enemy, an undead seagull. I left
out most of the enemy graphics
because they were creatures that I use often in my other games, and I
didn't really want other people using them.
A female pirate and a shadowy demon-type
thing. Both of these were
"mini-bosses" in the original game, but could just as easily be random
encounter.
Some bosses: Lord Kazoontite and his
four followers, who I never
actually came up with names for. The blue guy had water-elemental
powers, the red guy had fire, and the green girl had electricity... but
I can't remember what kind of powers the older guy in gray had.
Attacks
Basic physical attacks: a punch or blunt
weapon, a sword slash, and two
"sparkly magic wand" type things, one stronger than the other.
Various healing attacks. The "rising
sparkles" type are for
HP-restoring spells/items, the "rising bubbles" type are for
MP-restoring ones, the blue orb with stuff swirling around it is for a
"revive" type spell, the white sparkle with green stuff clearing away
from it is for a "cure poison" kind of thing, and the dissolving "..."
speech-bubble is for curing mute/silence status.
A bunch of stat-boosting/status-effect
spells. Most of these should be
pretty easy to figure out, but the "little guy that splits into two"
ones are for illusion-related spells (either raising your own evade, or
lowering the enemy's accuracy) and the one with four arrows moving out
is for a spell that returns raised/lowered stats back to normal.
Attack magic: wind, earth, a "magic
missle" type of thing, a gravity or
darkness-based spell, and finally some light-based things and an
explosion. I really like how the "giant rock smashing up out of the
ground" animation turned out.
Miscellaneous attack animations. The
first two were for a "defend"
command and a "scan" spell, the tiny flickering orbs are to duplicate
the effect that magic has in the NES Final Fantasy 3 (first a little
orb flies to the enemy, then the actual attack animation plays), and
the exclamation mark could be used for all sorts of things.
Battle
Backdrops
A grassy field, a forest, and a swampy
area. Made to look similar to
those of the NES Final Fantasy games,
with the black background and a
little bit of scenery at the top... but without the menu boxes around
everything.
Maptiles
The world map tileset probably has
enough for a complete game, with
deserts, snowy areas, forests, swamps, mountains, all kinds of towns,
and so on. The town tileset isn't quite as complete, though there's
enough different house types to make several different-looking towns.
Extra
Walkabouts
The first is a guy who was supposed to
be a king or high-ranking
wizard; you can tell because he's the only guy with a cape. There's
also a demon, a sailing ship, Lord Kazoontite's four followers, and
some random townsfolk NPCs. The demon may need to be fiddled with a bit
for it to work, since the black on the inside of the gray outline isn't
supposed to be transparent (though Custom will probably count it and
the background black as the same color when importing.)
Weapons
A mop, a broom, and a big sweeper-type
thing. These were Lorenzio's
weapons in the original game.
Various hammers and axes. These were
Elias' weapons in the original
game.
Magical wand-type thingies. These were
Puccena's weapons in the
original game.
Various staff-type things. These were
Hadada's weapons in the original
game.
And finally, a big curved sword, which
was Lord Kazoontite's weapon in
the original game.
