Fnrrf Ygm Schnish: Alleghany Hell School
A Preview by Fnrrf Ygm Schnish

I've never actually written a preview article for HamsterSpeak before, so I figured that since I'm actually working on Fnrrf Ygm Schnish: Alleghany Hell School for the first time in over a year, it'd be a pretty good time to give it a try.

Anyway, a little history to start off. FYS:AHS is the most recent version of the game I've been trying to make ever since 2003, when I was in my senior year of high school. Originally, the game was just titled Fnrrf Ygm Schnish, and only the very first part of the game took place in a school; after that it ended up inflating into one of those huge games where you can go pretty much everywhere all over the world. Well, it would have if I had ever finished it, anyway; I never got more than one hallway of the school done before losing interest and giving up. Unfortunately, I don't even have any screenshots of this one to show, since I deleted the only existing copy of it sometime in 2004 or so.

For a few years, I worked on other stuff. RPG Maker 2003 games, ROM hacks, a few OHRRPGCE games that never went anywhere... all kinds of stuff. And then, in 2006, I started working on the second version of the Fnrrf Ygm Schnish game (which, like the first, was just titled Fnrrf Ygm Schnish.) Like the first game, it was going to start out in the school as a sort of intro sequence and then branch out into a much bigger game... if I had actually gotten that far in making it. Unlike the first game, it actually got to a semi-playable state before I lost interest. Here's a few screenshots from what was there of the 2006 Fnrrf Ygm Schnish.

Hmm... what's going on here?First boss! Also, a plotscripting mistake makes Adam's walkabout disappear.

Okay, enough about those old unfinished games. Now it's time for the Fnrrf Ygm Schnish game that's actually going to get done (or at least get a decent demo that goes further than the opening sequence), Fnrrf Ygm Schnish: Alleghany Hell School. I started working on this one back in 2008, when I first got back into the OHRRPGCE after yet another period of absence. I wanted to finally make a Fnrrf Ygm Schnish game, but the 2006 version was going nowhere. It had way too many extra characters with very little role in the overall story, and I was having a hard time getting the story itself to fit together very well. Plus, I didn't like the idea of having a huge world map like the 2006 game would have had, especially in a game that's essentially set on real-world Earth. So I came up with the idea of a Fnrrf Ygm Schnish game where the characters would never see a world map for even a second, instead staying in or near one big building throughout the entire game. That building, of course, would be Alleghany High School.

The setting. Well, most of it, anyway.Of course!

Of course, you can't really have much of a game if you restrict the whole thing to a regular old high school. This was still a Fnrrf Ygm Schnish game, after all, even if it never zoomed out to the huge-scale world maps that the previous attempts would have all had. So instead of going out to a world map after you get through the early parts of the story, the game goes in... underneath the school, to the cave systems and cafeteria-food-laden dungeons and secret mad-scientist labs hidden somewhere below the surface. And a sewer, since every single game I make has to have a sewer.

Just because the story focuses on such a small area doesn't mean the fate of the world isn't at stake, though. There's lots of weird stuff going on at this seemingly-normal middle-of-nowhere high school...

Ewww, centipedes... creepy. Can't get out of the gym just yet...
All schools have rooms with giant cobwebs and old skeletons, right?Less cursing than Okedoke, so even the super-easily-offended kids can play!

It all starts with a power outage. Seems normal enough, right? Well, that doesn't last--just a few seconds after the lights go out, the school's principal comes on the intercom with the most suspicious-sounding "everything's going to be okay, just wait for the power to come back on" message that anyone has ever heard. And then the giant bugs start swarming everywhere, and a mysterious barrier of energy comes up around the outside of the school, sealing everyone inside.

What's causing all this weird stuff to happen? Well, some say that the legendary Num Coin, source of something called "Num Power," lies buried deep beneath the earth in the exact spot where Alleghany High School was built. And I'm sure there's plenty of power-hungry types around that would jump at the chance to find such a powerful artifact, even if it meant screwing up everyone else's day in the process... this is a high school, after all. But how would anyone even know about the Num Coin being hidden under the school in the first place?

Of course, there's going to be a lot more to do than just the important storyline-related stuff. There's tons of kids (okay, technically teenagers, but what's the difference?) running around, and some of them might even have something interesting or useful to say... though, again, it's a high school, so most of them won't. You'll also find hidden items in all sorts of weird places, including inside of lockers that someone forgot to lock, in cardboard boxes sitting around, and inside of vending machines (though I guess those don't really count as "hidden," since they advertise them and all.) You could rush through and fight the first boss within a little over 15 minutes if you wanted, or you could spend half an hour or more just exploring the school before ever entering the first real "dungeon" area.

Adam Nebozu, student council president and grade-A asshole.Hey, the brainless jock who left it hanging open probably doesn't deserve his stuff to begin with. Steal away!
And speaking of stealing...Exploring the library. Which might be a good place to start, hint hint.

There were going to be some hand-drawn, scanned-in pictures of some of the game's major characters here at the end of the article, but unfortunately the only scanner I have access to mysteriously stopped working recently and I wasn't able to figure out what the heck was wrong with the thing.

So instead, you get to see their walkabout, battle, and portrait sprites, as seen in the game itself. Of course, since most of you have probably already seen these on the "Hype Up Your Game Thread" on Slime Salad, there's also some information on each of the characters.

The fat guy. This is Eddie Ril, the first playable character you'll see in the game. When the power outage starts, he notices just how suspicious the principal's announcement sounds and decides to leave his classroom and try to figure out what's going on.

For most of the game, Eddie mainly relies on his physical strength and weapons, as he doesn't have any special skills or superpowers like many of the other characters. He does have one special attack, however--the Blubber Slam, which causes him to jump and slam down ontop of an enemy with all of his weight. Early on, this is easily the most powerful attack you have, though it tends to miss more often than most other attacks.
Eddie's HP and Attack are higher than anyone else's, and most of his other stats aren't too bad either. Being a fat guy with no superpowers, though, he's not especially fast; his Speed and Accuracy are the lowest in the game (though his Accuracy can be helped a bit by keeping his glasses equipped at all times.)

The blue-haired ninja. The second character you'll meet is Joguo Goueng-Zu, the heir to the Goueng-Zu ninja clan that, for some odd reason, decided to leave Japan about 200 years ago and relocated to some middle-of-nowhere town in Virginia.

Like Eddie, Joguo mostly relies on physical attacks; unlike Eddie, he's also gone through some ninja training, so he has a variety of special moves that allow him to throw ninja stars, trip enemies, and so on. He can also steal items from enemies, which could come in handy considering that the game is set in a school and the vending machines don't work during a power outage.
Though his HP and Attack are not quite as high as Eddie's, Joguo does have the best Defense of any character in the game, as well as high Speed and decent Accuracy and Evade. His Power and Wisdom are both rather low, however, making him more vulnerable to special attacks than most.

The girl with the scary claws. Joining the party third is Bridget Sticke, who seems to be a fairly normal (albeit abnormally tall) girl until she starts throwing fireballs at things. Not much else is known about her, except that she usually hangs out with a group of girls known as "the Swarm."

Though Bridget's physical attacks aren't exactly weak (and she even has the ability to attack all enemies at once using her Swarmclaw move), her specialty is magic. Throughout the game, she learns a variety of spells, allowing her to blast enemies with fire and electricity as well as poisoning them, lowering their stats, and even killing them instantly. Though she does learn a few beneficial spells later on, Bridget's focus is very heavily on offense.

Of all the playable characters, Bridget is by far the fastest, outspeeding even Joguo. Her Power stat is also the highest, enabling her magical attacks to cause a great deal of damage. However, she is somewhat frailer than most characters, with the lowest Defense and second-lowest HP in the game.

The guy who fixes stuff. Joining the party temporarily is Jason Sehmat, also known as "Jay." He's not as tough as the rest of the characters, though he (somewhat) makes up for this with his ability to use a variety of tools and machines in combat rather than his own strength. Though he leaves the party not long after he joins, it may be possible to get him back as a permanent part of the team later on.

Jay relies on his technological skill rather than strength or special powers, which makes it difficult for him to keep up with the others. Though he will eventually have access to better equipment, he starts out with only a few simple defensive weapons such as a taser, pepper spray, and a poison-dart gun.
Most of Jay's stats are pretty average all around, with none being dramatically higher or lower than the others (and all being lower than most of the other characters' stats.) He does have one strong point, however--his Accuracy is by far the highest in the game, ensuring that his attacks will rarely ever miss.

Don't let those As and Bs on his report card fool you for a minute... this guy's a moron. The student council president at AHS is Adam Nebozu. He's also a playable character, though (thankfully) he doesn't hang around with the party for too long. He'd rather be off playing golf or drinking excessive quantities of cheap beer than actually doing something important anyway.

Adam is essentially just a normal human, so he really has no special abilities. Instead, he fights using one of his golf clubs, either clobbering enemies with it or stepping back and sending golf balls flying in their direction. Unfortunately, hitting golf balls around inside a building isn't really a good idea, and they will sometimes bounce off a wall and hit a party member (or even Adam himself!) if you're unlucky.
Adam's stats are generally nothing special--most are average, aside from his low Accuracy, very low Power, and a Wisdom stat that makes even Joguo's look good. However, his HP is surprisingly decent, and his Attack and Defense are both slightly above average as well. He also has the highest Evade of all, mirroring his ability to get out of pretty much anything with a combination of lying, cheating, and sucking up to the school staff.

The mysterious amnesiac girl. The fourth party member to join (without leaving shortly afterward) is Damuru-J, whose name is only known thanks to a label found nearby in the place where the rest of the group first meets her. Even more mysterious than Bridget, though in her case it's because even she doesn't know anything about herself--pretty much all of her memory seems to have been wiped. Will she recover any of her memory as time goes on?

Like Bridget, Damuru-J has access to magical powers, though thanks to her condition she doesn't know exactly how or why. Unlike Bridget, her abilities are mainly defensive or healing in nature, though she does learn a few attacking spells (most of them ice-based) throughout the game.

Damuru-J's stats are heavily focused on her magical abilities, and she has the most EP and the highest Wisdom of all the characters. Her Power stat, though not quite as high as Bridget's, is also far higher than most of the others. She also has fairly good Defense, comparable to Eddie's (though weakened a bit by her lack of strong armor.) However, she has very little physical attacking power, and her HP and Evade are both the lowest in the game.
